What Is a Computer Virus?
A biological virus is a tiny organism that causes illness and can multiply only inside living cells. A virus reproduces by tricking a cell in which it resides into making copies of it. The copies of the virus can then leave the cell and do likewise in other cells. A computer virus works in much the same way. It can damage computer programs, can reproduce only inside a computer, and can trick a computer into making copies of it.
Computers follow instructions that are contained in computer programs. Modern computers are capable of both writing programs and modifying existing programs. A computer virus is a small program that instructs the computer in which it is located to, among other things, modify some other program on that computer by adding in the instructions that make up the virus program. When that newly affected program is run, it will cause the computer to, among other things, modify another program. The process continues in this way, producing more and more copies of the virus. If the computer shares programs with other computers, the virus can affect those computers.
