WHAT IS ITS MISSION?
As stated on its Web site, the mission of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is to "predict and describe changes in the Earth's environment, and conserve and wisely manage the Nation's coastal and marine resources." NOAA's goals in coastal and marine management are to build sustainable fisheries, to recover protected species, to sustain healthy coasts, and to promote safe navigation. In the area of prediction and description, the goals are to implement seasonal climate forecasts, to predict 10 to 100-year changes in weather, provide advance and short-term warning and forecast services, and to provide extensive environmental information services.
