WHAT IS ITS MISSION?
According to the official statement published by the Department of State, its mission is "to ensure national security by building and maintaining international alliances, and defusing and preventing crises; advance the economic interests of the American people by promoting free trade and assisting American businesses; promote democratic values and respect for human rights; and provide protection to Americans abroad and control access to the United States." The Department of State (DOS) is the primary foreign relations branch of the United States government and advises the president on all matters of foreign affairs.
