WHAT IS ITS MISSION?
Subject to the direction of the president of the United States or the secretary of defense, the U.S. Navy's primary mission is to protect the United States by the effective prosecution of war at sea. This mission, which involves the U.S. Navy's Marine Corps component, includes the seizure or defense of advanced naval bases, the support of all military departments of the United States, and the maintenance of freedom of the seas.
