WHAT IS ITS MISSION?
The Department of Education states that its mission is to "ensure equal access to education and promote educational excellence throughout the nation." It supports and complements the efforts of states, local school systems, parents, and students to improve the quality of education. Historically the aim of the department was to support institutions of higher learning. In the twentieth century, its mission expanded to provide leadership in establishing public high schools and elementary schools as a means of providing educational opportunities to all Americans. Efforts by the Department of Education to ensure access to educational opportunities for all children regardless of race, gender, or disability are a direct result of efforts ranging from civil rights legislation of the 1960s to the Americans with Disabilities Act enacted in 1990.
