HOW IS IT STRUCTURED?
The U.S. Air Force (USAF), a component of the U.S. Department of Defense along with the army and the navy, is led by the secretary of the air force, a civilian administrator who is appointed by the president and supervised by a military chief of staff. The secretary is responsible to the president and to the secretary of defense through the representation of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) of the Department of Defense. The secretary is responsible for ensuring the current and future readiness of the air force to accomplish its mission, and for overseeing the recruiting, training, and equipping of air force personnel.
