WHAT IS ITS MISSION?
The Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB) was created in 1988 as an independent agency for the oversight of all activities within the Department of Energy's nuclear weapons complex that have the potential to affect nuclear health and safety. The board does this through the review of operations, practices, and events that occur at Department of Energy defense nuclear facilities. The Department of Energy's defense nuclear facilities include sites across the United States where nuclear materials related to defense are processed, stored, or disposed. Examples of this nuclear material include fuel for navy submarines, the nation's strategic inventory of tritium gas, the plutonium cores of nuclear weapons, and radioactive waste awaiting treatment.
