This one, methought, as master of the sport,

After short course the father and the sons

For me, my father!' There he died, and e'en

HIS jaws uplifting from their fell repast,
Dante and Virgil have entered the Second Ring of the Ninth Circle, still with traitors against their counrty. They will then enter the Third Ring, home of traitors to their guests.
That is, I will recall sorrows that break my heart
This refers to Count Ugolino della Gherardesca, born into a Ghibelline family but switched to the Guelph party, is here because he betrayed his city, Pisa, and its leadership. After trying and failing to install a Guelph government in Pisa in 1274, he was exiled for several years. Upon his return, Ugolino, leading Pisan naval forces against Genoa, was defeated but was appointed the political leader of Pisa along with his grandson, Nino Visconti. During this time, Ugolino, for political reasons, turned over several Pisan castles to Lucca and Florence, a decision that created a rift among Guelphs and for which Dante places him among traitors to country.
Ugolino later cooperated with Ghibellines led by Archbishop Ruggieri degli Ubaldini, who demanded that Ugolino's grandson, Nino, be exiled from Pisa, thereby making Ugolino a traitor against family, as well as against country.
Archbishop Ruggiero had Ugolino arrested and he and two sons and two grandsons were thrown into a tower for eight months. When a new group of Ghibelline leaders took control of Pisa, they nailed shut the door of the tower and threw the keys into the Arno. Ugolino, his sons and grandsons starved to death.
That is, a mountain that keeps people in Pisa from seeing Lucca

That is, because your (Pisa's) neighbors are so slow to punish you
Brigata refers to one of Ugolino's grandsons, and Ugaccione is one of Ugolino's sons.
That is, they cannot weep because the tears freeze in their eyes, and because their grief has no outlet in tears, the grief turns inward and increases their agony.
These are three powerful families allied with Archbishop Ruggiero.
Pisa controlled these two islands in the Arno.
This refers to one of the Jovial Friars found in Pouch 6 of Circle 8, a group of clerics whose ostensible goals were to foster peace within families and between cities but who became infamous for corruption and high-living. Alberigo is here, however, because of his betrayal of guests. Alberigo and Manfred, a close relative, got into an argument, and Manfred slapped Alberigo, a very serious insult in the 13thC. Alberigo, acting as if the insult were forgotten and forgiven, invited Manfred and his son to a banquet. At the end of banquet, Alberigo signaled for the servants, who came in and killed Manfred and his son.
Dante and Virgil are now in the Third Ring of the Ninth Circle named after Ptolemy, and it could be named after one of two Ptolemeys or both. The first Ptolemey could be a captain of Jericho who gave a feast for the high priest Simon Maccabee and two of his sons, and then murdered them--much like Alberigo did with his relative Manfred and his son. The second Ptolemey is the brother of Cleopatra, Ptolemey II, who, after the Roman general Pompey sought refuge with the Egyptians after his defeat at Pharsalia (48 A. D.), had Pompey murdered.
This refers to one of the Fates.
That is, until its years have run their course.
This refers to a Genoese leader of the Ghibellines whose presence here baffles Dante because there is documentary proof that Branca d'Oria died almost thirty years after the date of Dante's journey and four years after Dante's own death. He is here, though, because he invited his father-in-law, a judge named Michel Zanche, who is also in the Inferno because of corruption, to dinner and then murdered Zanche and his companions.
This explains how D'Oria and Zanche could still be in the world of the living and in the Inferno at the same time--their living bodies are inhabited by devils, and their souls are in the Inferno.
The last and freezing river in the underworld. In Greek, cocytus means to lament.
