Then spake my master: "Let thy soul no more

Its thought, and leave him. At the bridge's foot
I mark'd how he did point with menacing look
At thee, and heard him by the others nam'd
Geri of Bello. Thou so wholly then
Wert busied with his spirit, who once rul'd
The towers of Hautefort, that thou lookedst not
That way, ere he was gone."—"O guide belov'd!
His violent death yet unaveng'd," said I,
"By any, who are partners in his shame,
Made him contemptuous: therefore, as I think,
He pass'd me speechless by; and doing so
Hath made me more compassionate his fate."
So we discours'd to where the rock first show'd
The other valley, had more light been there,
E'en to the lowest depth. Soon as we came
O'er the last cloister in the dismal rounds
Of Malebolge, and the brotherhood

Of Valdichiana, in the sultry time

"Arezzo was my dwelling," answer'd one,
"And me Albero of Sienna brought
To die by fire; but that, for which I died,
Leads me not here. True is in sport I told him,
That I had learn'd to wing my flight in air.
And he admiring much, as he was void
Of wisdom, will'd me to declare to him
The secret of mine art: and only hence,
Because I made him not a Daedalus,
Prevail'd on one suppos'd his sire to burn me.
But Minos to this chasm last of the ten,
For that I practis'd alchemy on earth,
Has doom'd me. Him no subterfuge eludes."
Then to the bard I spake: "Was ever race
Light as Sienna's? Sure not France herself
Can show a tribe so frivolous and vain."

Exempted, he who knew so temp'rately
To lay out fortune's gifts; and Niccolo
Who first the spice's costly luxury
Discover'd in that garden, where such seed

Lavish'd his vineyards and wide-spreading woods,
And his rare wisdom Abbagliato show'd
A spectacle for all. That thou mayst know
Who seconds thee against the Siennese

So shalt thou see I am Capocchio's ghost,
Who forg'd transmuted metals by the power

SO were mine eyes inebriate with view
Geri del Bello degli Aligheri was Dante's cousin on his father's side. Dante's son Pietro said Geri was murdered by Broaio dei Sacchetti. The murder was not avenged in 1310. Peace between the feuding families did not occur until 1342. It was completely legal at the time to avenge the murder of a family member.

This area was swamp and often malaria-infested.
Dante sees so many sinners with such indescribable wounds that his eyes are nearly "drunk" with the sight.
He and Virgil are in the Ninth Pouch of Circle Eight, still with the sowers of discord and scandal.
In other words, no other moat made you stare like this--what is the problem?
In Book IV of Ovid's Metamorphoses, the story of Aeacus is told. Aeacus was the son of the god Jupiter and the nymph Aegina. He was the ruler of the island Aegina, named for his mother. Juno (or "Hera") destroyed the islandd with a plague. Zeus repopulated the island by transforming ants into men. Aeacus was the grandfather of Achilles and the father of Peleus.
Because the moon is at the antipodes of Jerusalem, and the Inferno is below Jerusalem, the moon has already set, so it is early afternoon about two days after Dante set out on his journey.
This refers to Dante's cousin, described more fully in the next annotation, who is in this part of the Inferno because he is thought to be a falsifier. Commentators at the time accused him of an being an alchemist, an imposter, a counterfeiter, and a sower of discord. Geri is accused of having created dissension among the Sacchetti family and, as a result, may have been murdered by a Sacchetti.
There have been two identifications of "Albero of Sienna." Early scholars claim that this man as "Griffolino," an Arentine who was convicted of heresy and burned at the stake in 1272. But later, other scholars argue that Albero was the son protege, and perhaps actual son, of the Bishop of Sienna.
This is Niccolo di Giovanni de' Salimbeni, a member of the "brigata spendereccia" ("The Spendthrifts' Club"), a group of young nobles from Sienna who spent their wealth as lavishly as possible. It is estimated that they went through their entire fortunes in just to years.
There are claims that Niccolo introduce the exotic and expensive spice cloves to the gardens of Sienna.
In 1293, Capocchio was burned alive in Sienna.
That is, Val di Chiana's hospitals
Dante is comparing the falsifiers and their terrible wounds and illnesses with the victims of the plague at Aegina.
That is, they were covered in scabs from head to foot.
In other words, the scabs on their skin came off just like a knife scrapes the scales of large fish like carp.
Virgil says, in other words, "you who use your nails to strip yourself."
Griffolino is in this area of the Inferno because he convinced Alberto that he could fly like Daedalus, and Alberto paid him to learn to fly. Later, when Alberto realized that Griffolino couldn't teach him to fly, Alberto denounced Griffolino for heresy. His punishment was to be burned at the stake, but God understood his true sin--falsifying--and put him here rather than with the heretics.
Griffolino was also known for his attempts at alchemy--changing base metal into gold--which was just a "scientific" way of committing more fraud and fleecing his customers.
In Greek and Roman mythology, Minos is one of three judges in Hades who determines where the dead shall spend their time. In this context, Minos is clearly working under God's supervision.
In other words, Dante is asking Virgil if there was ever a race as stupid ("Light") as those from Siena.
This refers to Caccia d'Asciano who is thought to have been forced to sell his major source of income, a vineyard, to pay for his spendthrift ways.
A reference to Bartolomeo dei Folcacchieri (nicknamed Abbagliato, meaning "dazed" or "bedazzled"), a Sienese political leader, who was once fined for drinking where it was illegal.
Capocchio, which means "Blockhead," is almost a comical figure here. He is alleged to have done several odd things, but the oddest was painting the story of Christ's passion in miniature on his fingernails, and when Dante asked him about the paintings, which were apparently quite good, Capocchio licked them off his fingernails. Dante reproached him for destroying such good work.
That is, Italy. Latian or Latium is always a reference to Italy and the people who inhabited Italy before, in Greek and Roman mythology, the arrival of the Trojan race, led by Aeneas, exiled from Troy after the Trojan War, as discussed by Virgil in the Aeniad. Aeneas and his son, Ascanius, are the ancestors of the Roman race.
