Burgundy's Rudolph III dies childless February 2. The Holy Roman Emperor Conrad II claims Rudolph's realm under terms of a 1027 treaty of succession and unites it with the empire.
Robert II, duke of Normandy, helps France's Henri I defeat his mother, Constance, and her younger son, Robert, thus ending the French civil war.
Pope John XIX dies in November or December after an 8-year reign in which the Holy Roman Emperor Conrad II has controlled ecclesiastical affairs outside Rome. Public protest has forced him to withdraw his recognition of the patriarch of Constantinople, for which he was well paid, and he is succeeded by a cleric who will reign until 1045 as Benedict IX.
