In this scene, Marlene is conducting a job interview with a young woman who has no idea what sort of job she wants. This scene, in which we see a rare side of Marlene in which she display compassion towards one of her applicants, shows that Marlene has sympathy for women who remind her of herself at earlier stages in her life. Marlene herself felt lost and helpless much as the young woman Jeanine does. Later in the scene, Angie, Marlene's niece, arrives unexpectedly at the office to visit her aunt. Angie doesn't know that Marlene is actually her mother. By putting herself in a similar position to one of the job applicants, Angie invites Marlene's criticism and judgment, and seeks her approval.
