Posted by appletrees on Sunday August 23, 2009 at 2:05 PMThe play is concerned with commenting upon women's roes and impact upon society. The first act's restaurant meeting of several women from history and art, being interviewed by a contemporary woman from London, provides a wide range of cultural and historical perspectives. But the main commonality of all these experiences is that the all fail to achieve success or happiness because of obstacles directly related to gender; for example, Pope Joan poses as a man and is stoned to death in the street when she gives birth during a papal procession. The women commiserate with her story and joke about it, and continue to share their horrible experiences in a jovial atmosphere. To have a similar meeting of men from history would be implausible, because historically speaking men have not been held back or punished because of their gender.
