Tom envies Huck's liberty and vagabondage, but at the same time he feels bad about him not having a family and belonging somewhere. He tells his aunt that it's "not fair" and adds that everyone has the right to be loved.

When Tom and Huck finally go their separate ways, they promise to one day be pirates and relive the complicity they have enjoyed thus far. Each knows, however, that this "dream" will never happen. They have seen too much of real greed, real theft and real murder.

Tom's childhood 'dream' is conflict on a psychological level, that of man versus himself; he says goodbye to Huck to lead a "civilized" life even if he imagines to one day do otherwise.
