Tom changes over the course of the book. At the beginning of the book Tom is careless about what he does, for example, beating up the new comer to town, and heedless about what his aunt tells him to do, refusing to come when she calls. Then Tom develops love for a girl and tries to impress her with crazy antics. However, he is soon faced with heartbreak and the task of trying to get her back. Tom then runs away and after he comes back he is much more heeding of what his aunt says. He also manages to get back the girl he loves. Then he gets lost in the cave and he and his girl friend almost die of starvation but he finds a way out. After his cave episode he is much more careful about what he is doing.
