When the Thatchers join the congregation, everyone begins "showing off" in their own way in order to make a good first impression on Judge Thatcher and gain his attention. Tom begins acting out, poking his classmates, pulling hair, etc, in order to attract Becky Thatcher's attention. Mr. Walters begins showing off as well, giving orders and looking busy and in control. The librarian shows off by running around with books and making a fuss, and the young women teachers show off by sweetly comforting students or patting their heads. The young men teachers showed off by disciplining students. The boys and girls all "show off" by acting out and whispering and throwing things and trying to get attention. But Tom, as usual, has the last word, and gains all the attention by presenting the tickets to get a Bible, therefor guaranteeing that Judge Thatcher notices him. And he does notice him, getting quite the first impression, especially when Tom is asked the names of the first two disciples and calls out "David and Goliath!"
