Scout has always enjoyed and gotten along well with Jack, but his Christmas visit does not bode well when she curses at dinner. He sits her down after supper and warns her not to speak that way in front of him. During the same visit, when Atticus, Jack and the children travel to Finch's Landing for Christmas, Scout gets in trouble again for hitting Francis, her Aunt Alexandra's grandson. Francis had been calling Atticus as a "nigger lover," referring to the upcoming trial of Tom Robinson, causing Scout to lose her temper. Jack spanks her, and she is very angry with her uncle because he didn't even ask her for her side of the story. After Jack gives her a chance to explain, he becomes angry again, this time at Francis, and he and Scout are able to re-establish their friendly relationship.
