As an adult, Scout looks back to the time when she and her brother Jem were children growing up in Maycomb, Alabama. She is the narrator of the story.
As a child, Scout is a smart, independent, and outspoken little tomboy. She has a temper that gets her in trouble from time to time. She prefers to wear overalls and joins her brother in many adventures, most of which concern their elusive neighbor, Boo Radley. Scout experiences many conflicts in the story that shape her character as an adult. She loves her father dearly, and it is his wise guidance that helps her grow up during difficult times.
