    Maycomb is described as a "tired old town" where rain turned the streets to "red slop; grass grew on the sidewalks, the courthouse sagged in the square."  Bony mules "flicked flies in the sweltering shad of the live oaks," and people "ambled across the square."

    The Radley's house was once "white with a deep front porch and green shutters, but had long ago darkened to the color of the slate-gray yard around it."  Another description of their house said that "rain-rotted shingles drooped over the eaves of the veranda."

    The best description of Mrs. Dubose's house is in her room where there was "a marble-topped washstand by her bed; on it were a glass with a teaspoon in it, a read ear syringe, a box of absorbent cotton, and a steel alarm clock standing on three tiny legs."
