The corporal punishment used by Miss Caroline is quite different from the gentle reasoning employed by Atticus. Scout learned to read at home by experiential learning: she sat on Atticus’s lap and watched his moving finger as he read. Miss Caroline, however, forbids her to read anymore at home."
Atticus was a good father and he is a very patient man. He is upright and knows how to be a diplomat. When Scout comes home and tells Atticus about the way her teacher had reprimanded her for reading with Atticus he is very kind and explains to her that she has to continue to go to school and they just won't tell her teacher that they are reading together.
