In "To Kill a Mockingbird" Dill wants to make Boo Radley come out of the house.  When Jem replies that Dill will get himself killed if he goes on the porch and knocks, Dill ridicules him, saying that people from Meridian, Mississippi, are not as afraid as people from Maycomb, Alabama.  This insult Jem ponders for three days.  Scout says, "I suppose he loved honor more than his head."  When Dill tells Jem, "You're scared," Jem marches to the corner and leans against the light-pole.  He continues to argue that Boo will kill them and he has a sister to protect; Scout remarks that she knows at this point that Jem is afraid.

Finally, Dill offers a compromise:  Jem must only touch the house and he will not say that Jem ran out on a dare. Reluctantly, Jem walks up the street.  he flings open the gate, speeds to the side of the house, slapping it with his palm.  Then, he runs past them to the Finch porch.  When the children look back at the Radley place, they see a "flick" of a shutter, no more.
