One of the innocent "mockingbirds" of Harper Lee's novel, To  Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson is the crippled young black man who is falsely accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a member of Maycomb's most notorious "white trash" family. He had tried to help Mayella with some heavy lifting at the Ewell home, but she initiated a kiss and then blamed Tom of attacking her after the two of them were discovered by her father. Atticus Finch was assigned to defend Tom, knowing that no white jury would acquit him, but he proceeded with his normal tenacity. His left arm was crippled, a fact that Atticus hoped would help convince the jury of his innocence. When he took the stand,

... Atticus very quickly induced him to tell us:
Tom was twenty-five years of age; he was married with three children; he had been in trouble with the law before: he once received thirty days for disorderly conduct.
