    Instead of commending her intelligence, the teacher blames Scout for having learned to read without having been taught "properly." It's as if Miss Caroline resents not getting credit for the accomplishments of her student and feels undermined as a teacher by the fact that Scout didn't need her to learn.

    Then the teacher scolds Scout for explaining to her why Walter Cunningham can't borrow a quarter as lunch money. Scout is just trying to be helpful, but Miss Caroline takes her insistence the wrong way and punishes her for her interference.

    Scout has also been warned not to read bed time stories anymore at home, a ritual she looks forward to each night. Later Atticus strikes a deal with Scout that if she will go back to school without a fuss, she can still read to him at night and he "won't tell."
