The neighbors assume that the shots that rang out were aimed at a black man who was trespassing on the Radley property. According to Miss Stephanie, who else would be caught at such an hour on the Radley property? This distinctly shows the prejudice of not only Miss Stephanie, but the whole town as well. It also foreshadows how the town will react when Atticus defends Tom Robinson in Part II of the book. If a crime is committed, the people of the town assume it has to be a black man who has done it.
