Posted by bullgatortail on Monday November 2, 2009 at 6:46 PMFollowing the death of Mrs. Dubose in Chapter 11 of the Harper Lee novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem turns 12 years old and becomes "difficult... inconsistent, moody," according to Scout. Although Scout thought he may have a tapeworm, Atticus simply reminds her that Jem is growing. He tell her to "be patient with him" and stay out of his way. When Scout runs in tears to Calpurnia, the housekeeper tells her the same thing.
"He's gonna want to be off to himself a lot now, doin' whatever boys do."
Calpurnia tells Scout to join her in the kitchen when Jem has no time for her; she will find things for her to do.
But for Scout, her relationship with her brother has changed, especially after his scolding admonition:"It's time you started bein' a girl and acting right!"
