The driver of the Jeep in which the Mirabal sisters are riding when they are pulled over to be killed is a man named Rufino. He works for Bournigal, a company that rents vehicles. Rufino is about Minerva's age, in his mid-thirties, and the girls have taken a liking to him, sensing "his unspoken allegiance" to them. He has become their favorite driver, and Minerva observes that "every time (they) rented from Bournigal, (they) asked for him" Chapter 12).
Rufino is assassinated, along with Patria, Minerva, and Maria Teresa Mirabal. When their bodies are recovered, the proprietor at the funeral parlor wants to place the girls in fancy coffins, although "pine (is) appropriate enough for a chauffeur". Dede demurs, choosing instead to have all four victims buried in plain, simple boxes provided by friends. She concludes, "they all died the same, let them all be buried the same" (Epilogue).
