Politically, the book covers the period in the Domincan Republic when military dictator Trujillo took power. The "butterflies" are the 4 Mirabal sisters, who are become symbols of resistance to his rule.

Race plays an important part, as the Dominican Republic has both light and dark skinned people. Trujillo himself was of mixed race, and was not accepted as "white" by the ruling powers he helped overthrow.
