    For Minerva, Trujillo represents the sexual subjugation of women in the Dominician.  She watches helplessly as her good friend becomes one of his concubines.  Realizing this inequity helps Minerva understand the limited choices of women in her country, and strengthens her resolve to change things.

    For Dede, the only surviving sister, Trujillo is responsible for taking away her family from her.  Her sisters and her father all die at his whims.

    For Patria, Trujillo's brutality causes the loss of her son, though indirectly. 

    For Maria Teresa, Trujillo is equated with the loss of her childhood.  The girl goes from drawing pictures of bows and dresses to diagramming bombs.
