In his battle to be able to swim "Through the Tunnel" Jerry must fight his own physical weakness by learning to hold his breath under water, and he must fight against his embarrassment at being left behind by the native boys. His determination to be able to swim through the tunnel marks the beginning of his passage from boyhood to young adulthood.
