The actor had to approached the character, Anfisa in different possible ways, different approaches from different directions. Firstly, the old governess is ageing very quickly after having living in the Prozorov family for thirty years, so she must have a lot of experience working under them. Her bodily movements might have been restricted as one grows old, their functions starts to degenerate so her social functions too might be different and...

I am currently rehearsing to play Andrey in Three Sisters. And the word of my Director is that the play is 'Three Sisters' as opposed the 'The Three Sisters' bacause although this family is used to tell this story, it is not about these specific sisters but an example of what my many families were going through at the time. Its a slice of the culture.

It is not any sort of nefarious intent nor is it a lack of research. What you see as a problem here is simply a choice of the translators from Russian to English. Some translators prefer to use the article "the" while others stay truer to the original language by omitting the article. I do not speak Russian, so I will leave it to another to further explain the choices made as a translator makes his or her decisions.

Another way to introduce this play would be to ask your students to write in their journals about a time they felt trapped and what their dream of escape was. For example, one student might write that she feels trapped living at home with her parents and longs for the freedom to have an apartment of her own. A more powerful way to give meaning to this exercise would be to encourage the students to use concrete authentic detail, perhaps...

Although I try not to recommend videos as a way to introduce novels (I usually find that once students know there is a video, all hope of reading goes out the window), this video with members of New York's Actor's Studio, including Shelley Winters, Sandy Dennis, and Geraldine Page, is very interesting. Perhaps you could show them just a clip of it to get them interested. It was filmed in 1965, directed by Paul Bogart, and released by Hen's...

Ah, good question. An actor would need to approach Anfisa from several different directions. On the physical level, Anfisa is quite old. This would restrict her movements in a universal fashion, and would shape them in a culturally specific fashion. (It would be likely for her to use gestures that are out of date, just as an older gentleman might tip his hat, but a young man might be surprised by this.) On the social level, she is a servant,...
