Luke was a physician who travelled with the Apostle Paul. Many think his gospel plus the Book of Acts, which Luke also wrote, was a defense account written for Paul when he was taken to Rome. Luke writes at the beginning of the gospel ( Luke 1:3-4)"It seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus; so that you might know the exact truth about the things you have been taught. The name "Theophilus" means "lover of God" and some suggest he might have been Paul's lawyer or some other influential Christian in Rome who could help Paul with his defense in front of Caesar.
