Cross's thoughts about Martha sustain him through the tough times. Even though Martha has clearly established that the feelings of love are not mutual, Cross still holds on to them as sort of a buoy, a way to lift himself up; they are fantasies, which help him escape from the horrors of war.

After a while Cross becomes more negative and begins to face reality, citing the fact that their worlds are simply just too different. Her letters are are about college and fun stuff and his are about war and hardship.

Cross blames himself when Kiowa is killed in the field. He claims his daydreams of Martha led him to distraction and to make the wrong decision regarding where to tell the troops to hunker down. This leads to him completely riding him mind of Martha.

I think the fantasies are good. I think that soldiers need to hang on to some form of positivity in tough combat situations. Sometimes it is their lifeboat, the only way they can make it out alive and unscathed, in spite of the horrors.
