If you have to ask if something is symbolic, the answer is probably "yes". I haven't read this book, but the name "Cross" automatically suggests several things to me--his mood or temperment (is he an uptight guy or pretty even-keeled?); his ability to make decisions (does he make decisions and then cross or second-guess himself?); and of course, religion (is he a Christ figure in the book?
