I'm looking for a creative way to help my jr. & sr. boys somehow relate to what these men went through. They are low level readers and seem very disconnected from the text. Posted by dtjheath on Oct 24, 2009. |

You could have them read a little bit of Walter Dean Myers fictional Fallen Angels. I have had many junior non-readers say that this is the only book that they have actually read for school and enjoyed. The novel follows a young African-American through his combat experience in the war. The author uses a good mix of humor and male bonding to discuss how war changes someone. If you don't have time to read another work, I would suggest having your students create illuminated texts on some of the stories in The Things They Carried. I use several of these stories for my students' illuminated text projects, and they end up being some of the best presentations. To see an example of this type of presentation, go to www.awaytoteach.net and watch the "Cat in the Rain" illuminated text. Your students will really enjoy doing this, and it helps mine so much with characterization, tone, style, and plot.
