O'Brien's first book, If I Die in a Combat Zone, Box Me Up and Ship Me Home (1973), was shortly followed by Northen Lights (1974) and Going After Cacciato (1978), a story about a soldier who abandons the Vietnam War to head for Paris, which won the National Book Award, and The Nuclear Age (1985) about a young boy's obsession with the nuclear arms race.
