Summary
Ezeudu, one of the oldest men in the clan, is dead. The last time Ezeudu visited Okonkwo, he told him not to participate in Ikemefuna’s death because the boy called him father. Ezeudu was a great man, and he is given a warrior’s funeral. The drums of death are beaten, and the guns are fired. Warriors painted with chalk and charcoal assemble in age groups wearing smoked raffia shirts. Several ancestral spirits or egwugwu appear from the underworld speaking in unearthly voices. Some egwugwu, like Evil Spirit, are violent and have to be restrained....
