The main literary element in Chapter 3 is character development. With the introduction of the gramophone recording, Christie provides background information on each character while also revealing the real reason that everyone has been assembled on the island by the mysterious U. N. Owen (and other derivations of the name). The recording not only provides neccessary background information for each character, but each reaction to the recording also develops character. For example, Lombard simply acknowledges his role in killing 21 men, indicating that he has a clear conscience and accepts the responsibility of his actions, while Mrs. Rogers' fainting spell indicates a guilty conscience and/or a high-strung, nervous personality.
