The season ends and most of the workers leave the Everglades. Janie and Tea Cake decide to stay because they want to work in the farm one more year. With less to do in the off-season, Janie spends more time in a café and begins to talk more with Mrs. Turner. Mrs. Turner is a light-skinned woman who wants to befriend Janie because she is also light-skinned.
