One connection between these two novels may be psychology. "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" deals with the psychology of guilt, and what it means to be a victim. "Heart of Darkness" deals with the psychology of domination and what it means to seize power over others. Contrasting the psychological processes of the protagonists in both novels would be a great paper. The characters are starkly different, but the psychological processes they go through are similar.
