Wells-Barnett (1862–1931) is best known for leading the fight against the lynching of African Americans in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Already established as a respected voice within the African American community in Memphis, Wells published Southern Horrors in 1892 after a close friend died along with two other black men at the hands of a lynch mob.
