Alonso is the sworn enemy of Prospero, a magician and the former Duke of Milan, because of his role in the Duke's overthrow. Bitter because of this treachery, and his situation thereafter, Prospero causes the tempest, or great storm, which Alonso, Ferdinand, and their crew encounter as they are sailing home after attending the marriage of Alonso's daughter. Alonso is stranded on an island, and endures a time of suffering during which he believes his son is dead. By the end of the play he is repentant for his crimes, reunited with his son, and reconciled with Prospero.
