Question:
How does "The Tempest" work as an argument about the degree to which justice/vengeance should be tempered by mercy /grace?

The play mainly makes this point in the final act. Prospero says to Ariel:

In other words, he listens to mercy or grace, rather than his desire for revenge, in deciding what to do with those who wronged him in the past and the present. This does come fairly suddenly, and we might suspect that there's also a change due to simple aging here, and one due to seeing his daughter in love.
