Original Text Modern Translation
CALIBAN:
I shall be pinched to death.
CALIBAN:
I shall be pinched to death.
ALONSO:
Is not this Stephano, my drunken butler?
ALONSO:
Isn’t this Stephano, my drunken butler?
SEBASTIN:
He is drunk now. Where had he wine?
SEBASTIN:
He’s drunk now: where did he have wine?
ALONSO:
And Trinculo is reeling ripe. Where should they(325)
Find this grand liquor that hath gilded ’em?
[to Trinculo] How camest thou in this pickle?
ALONSO:
And Trinculo is reeling-drunk: where would they
Find this grand liquor that has made them drunk?
How did you get into this pickle?
TRINC:
I have been in such a pickle since I saw you last that,
I fear me, will never out of my bones. I shall not fear fly-
blowing.(330)
TRINC:
I have been in similar a pickle since I saw you
last that, I’m afraid, will never get out of my bones. I
won’t be afraid of blow flies.
SEBASTIAN:
Why, how now, Stephano?
SEBASTIAN:
Why, how is it now, Stephano!
STEPH:
O, touch me not! I am not Stephano, but a cramp.
STEPH:
Oh! Don’t touch me: I am not Stephano, but a cramp.
PROSP:
You'd be king o's the isle, sirrah?
PROSP:
You'd be king of the island, servant?
STEPH:
I should have been a sore one then.
STEPH:
I should have been a sore one, then.
ALONSO:
[pointing to Caliban] This is a strange thing as e'er I(335)
look'd on.
ALONSO:
This is as strange a thing as I have ever looked on.
PROSP:
He is as disproportioned in his manners
As in his shape. [to Caliban] Go, sirrah, to my cell.
Take with you your companions. As you look
To have my pardon, trim it handsomely.(340)
PROSP:
He is as wretched in his manners
As he is in his shape.—Go, servant, to my dwelling;
Take your companions with you: since you look
To have my forgiveness, do it well.
CALIBAN:
Ay, that I will; and I'll be wise hereafter,
And seek for grace. What a thrice-double ass
Was I to take this drunkard for a god,
And worship this dull fool!
CALIBAN:
Yes, I will; and I'll be wise hereafter,
And seek for grace. What a three times two ass
I was, to take this drunkard for a god,
And worship this dull fool!
PROSP:
Go to, away!(345)
PROSP:
Get going; away!

[Exit Caliban]

ALONSO:
[to Stephano and Trinculo] Hence, and bestow your lug-
gage where you found it.
ALONSO:
Here, and your baggage back where you found it.
SEBASTIAN:
Or stole it, rather.
SEBASTIAN:
Or stole it, rather.

[Exeunt Stephano and Trinculo]

PROSP:
[to Alonso] Sir, I invite your highness and your train
To my poor cell, where you shall take your rest(350)
For this one night; which, part of it, I'll waste
With such discourse as I not doubt shall make it
Go quick away: the story of my life
And the particular accidents gone by
Since I came to this isle. And in the morn(355)
I'll bring you to your ship, and so to Naples,
Where I have hope to see the nuptial
Of these our dear-belovèd solemnized;
And thence retire me to my Milan, where
Every third thought shall be my grave.(360)
PROSP:
Sir, I invite your Highness and your train
To my poor dwelling, where you shall rest
Because this one night, which—part of it—I'll waste
With similar discussion as, I have no doubt, shall make it
Go quick away; the story of my life
And the particular events gone by
Since I came to this island: and in the morning,
I'll bring you to your ship, and so sail to Naples,
Where I hope to see the marriage
Of these our dear-beloved children solemnized;
And from there, I will retire to my Milan, where
Every third thought I have shall be my grave.
ALONSO:
I long
To hear the story of your life, which must
Take the ear strangely.
ALONSO:
I long
To hear the story of your life, which must
Affect the ear strangely.
PROSP:
I'll deliver all,
And promise you calm seas, auspicious gales(365)
And sail so expeditious that shall catch
Your royal fleet far off. [aside to Ariel] My Ariel, chick,
That is thy charge. Then to the elements
Be free, and fare thou well!

[Exit Ariel]

Please you, draw near.(370)
PROSP:
I'll tell it all;
And promise you calm seas, helpful winds,
And sailing so quickly that you shall catch
Your royal fleet which is now far away.—

My Ariel, Dear,
That is your order: then you are free to the elements
And fare you well!—Please, come near.

[Exeunt all but Prospero]
