Tartuffe is a religious satire; the point of the play is to show the audience that looks can be deceiving. The characters in the play that show the most honor are Damis, Valere, and Elmire. Damis, Marianne's brother and Orgon's son, tries to prevent Tartuffe from embedding himself into their home, supplanting him as heir, stealing Marianne's hand in marriage, and gaining control of their entire estate, under the false pretense of being a scholar of religion and religious virtue. Valere, Marianne's fiance, seeks to pray by himself at odd hours when no one else is around or can see a very honorable trait. This contrasts with Tartuffe, who only goes to church when others are sure to see him; so he can keep up the pretense of being a man of strong religious virtue.  Tartuffe demonstrates his dishonesty further when he tries to have an affair with Orgon's wife, Elmire. Orgon finally realizes his mother Mme. Pernelle, was wrong about her perception of Tartuffe's honor, and he finally admits he was wrong, recognizing his wife Elmire's honor and honesty as well as his son Damis' honor and honesty. The family's honor and estate is restored thanks to a benevolent King who recognizes Tartuffe as a fraud.
