Talley’s Folly takes place on the evening of July 4, 1944, in the old boathouse on the Talley property just outside the small Ozark town of Lebanon, Missouri. The boathouse, dripping with Victorian curlicues and gingerbread, was built in 1870 by Sally’s eccentric uncle, Everett ‘‘Whistler’’ Talley, who also built the town bandstand and other fanciful structures, or ‘‘follies,’’ all over town.
