The American Dream is the idea the each American can be successful regardless of wealth or education. Their success depends only on how hard they work to achieve their dreams. What they put in to life is ultimately what they get from it. Therefore, in The Talented Mr Ripley, Tom Ripley embodies the idea of the American Dream. He is able to achieve success despite his working class background.
However, does Highsmith condemn or condone the idea of The American Dream given that a major part of Tom's success is a result of his violence and sociopathy?
