Posted by accessteacher on Sunday August 16, 2009 at 6:28 AMIt is clear as the novel reaches its climax with the imminent execution of Darnay, that Sidney Carton is going to use his striking physical resemblance to Darnay to switch himself for Charles and be executed in the place of Darnay. What is crucial in helping Carton to make this decision is his visit to the Wine Shop and his overhearing Madame Defarge's insistence that not only Darnay but also his wife and daughter must die as well. His love for Lucie gives him impetus to meet Darnay, trick him into swapping clothes with him and then drugging him. Having already organised for the safe departure of Dr. Manette and the Darnay's, Carton is executed in Darnay's place, sacrificing his life so that Darnay might live, and giving the novel its theme of the possibility of resurrection through sacrifice.
