Chiaraoscuro is a term mostly used in art for the way the artist uses light and shade in a painting or picture. It is associated with Rembrandt, whose variations in the use of light and shade are very dramatic. Sometimes, it is also associated with literature. For example, in "The Scarlet Letter", Hawthorne makes use of dark and light imagery ( the sun shining on only Pearl, for example), especially in the forest scenes of the novel.
