One such quote is "The meaning of life is suffering, especially the suffering of others." This quote, spoken by a conniving and unhappy rat, sums up his philosophy of life, but it's important to understand that the author wants the reader to realize that the opposite is true.
Another great quote is "Reader, you must know that an interesting fate awaits almost everyone, mouse or man, who does not conform." This statement, made by the narrator, not only refers to the great adventure Desperaux experiences in the book, but is also meant to encourage the reader to be as brave as the story's protagonist and find the courage to be themselves in a world that values and validates conformity.
