Gastrectomy

Definition

Gastrectomy is the surgical removal of all or part of the stomach.

Purpose

Gastrectomy is performed most commonly to treat the following conditions:

  • stomach cancer
  • bleeding gastric ulcer
  • perforation of the stomach wall
  • noncancerous polyps
