Definition
Gastrectomy is the surgical removal of all or part of the stomach.
Purpose
Gastrectomy is performed most commonly to treat the following conditions:
- stomach cancer
- bleeding gastric ulcer
- perforation of the stomach wall
- noncancerous polyps
