The Street | Characters
The Street presents a relatively small number of characters. These include Lutie Johnson's deceased grandmother, Granny, who was a major influence on Lutie and a source of kindness and comfort, and her grandfather. Pop, a bootlegger and ne'er-do-well. Lutie, the main character of the novel, marries Jim Johnson right after high school. They live in a frame house in Jamaica, New York, and at first Jim is the model husband and father. But when Jim loses his job, he begins to bring other women home while his wife is at work.
Eventually, Lutie leaves Jim and moves to Harlem....
